MECHANICSBURG — Greencastle-Antrim faced off against the No. 1-ranked team in District 3 Class 6A — Cumberland Valley — in the Mid Penn Conference semifinals on Thursday afternoon and held their own against the Eagles.
The biggest difference was that G-A had a 6 in the error column to just one for CV and that was a huge factor in the 10-4 win for the Eagles.
“We hit with them — we both had seven hits,” Blue Devil coach Mark DeCarli said. “But those six errors really hurt. You can’t afford to do that against a good team like that. We made a lot of errors we normally don’t make.
“CV is a legit team, no question about that. But except for the inning we gave up six runs, we were with them. If you take away the errors, it’s a different game and our attitude would have been better, too.”
The Eagles (17-1), who defeated Mechanicsburg 3-2 in the championship game, scored a run in the second, 2 in the third and 6 in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead behind star pitcher Sydney May.
But Greencastle (15-4) rallied for 4 runs in the sixth inning. After an out, Meadow Gambacurta and Makayla Jerin each singled, then Kylie Kerns reached base on an error. Pinch-hitter Kindal Rice grounded out, which scored the first run.
Alexis Jones then produced a base hit that scored two runs and Bailey Leckron delivered a run-scoring single.
DeCarli said, “May was pretty good (7 hits, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts), but we did get some hits against her later in the game.”
Kaidyn Zimmerman (3-3) took the loss for Greencastle, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing 4 hits and 6 runs (2 earned). Paiton Gordon finished up, with 2.2 innings, 3 hits and 4 unearned runs.
Gambacurta and Jerin were each 2-for-3 for G-A. For the Eagles, May was 3-for-4 and Lauren Richardson belted a two-run home run.
