Greencastle-Antrim 11, Northern York 1: Six Blue Devil players had at least one run batted in and G-A won a Mid Penn Colonial game in five innings over the Polar Bears at home on Wednesday afternoon.
Greencastle (7-7, 4-6 MPC) scored 2 runs in the first inning, one in the second, 5 in the fourth and 3 more in the fifth to end the game.
“We went from having nine hits and scoring no runs (vs. Waynesboro on Monday), to having 11 runs on 12 hits,” Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said. “We were focused on hitting the middle of the baseball.”
Landon Huth pitched all 5 innings for G-A, allowing only 4 hits, walking 3 and fanning 6.
“That was vintage Landon tonight,” Shaner said. “We needed that.”
At the plate, Ethan Ford was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs; Garrett Decker was 2-for-3 and scored 3 times; Ryan Farrow was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI; Jarek Szaflarski was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI; Logan Shifflett doubled in a run, as did Avery Horst, and JD Flynn had a hit and an RBI.
SOFTBALL
Northern York 9, Greencastle-Antrim 5: A 4-run bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Polar Bears handed the Blue Devils a key Mid Penn Colonial Division defeat Wednesday afternoon in Dillsburg.
The teams are tied atop the Colonial standings with 2 division losses each, after splitting their season series.
“We’ll have to win out in the division to be co-champs,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “They got us back today. We made some simple mistakes, not necessarily errors, that we usually don’t do. And Northern took advantage of that.”
Makayla Jerin had a big day at the plate for the Blue Devils (10-3, 8-2 MPC), going 3-for-4, belting a pair of home runs, and driving in four runs.
The Polar Bears’ 4-run inning made it 6-2 in their favor. Greencastle tried to rally, with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but 2 more Northern runs in the sixth made the deficit too much.
“We were fighting back, but they were just too far ahead,” DeCarli said. “We had a couple of bases-loaded situations we didn’t do much with.”
Emily Randalls was 3-for-4 with a double and triple and knocked in 2 runs for the Bears.
