G-A roundup: Ship sweeps Blue Devils in baseball, softball

SOFTBALL
Shippensburg 6, Greencastle-Antrim 3: Riley Mullen allowed 9 hits and 3 walks to the Blue Devils, but pitched out of trouble several times and the Greyhounds handed G-A its first loss of the season Wednesday in a Mid Penn Colonial game in Greencastle.

Bailey Leckron

The Blue Devils (6-1, 4-1 MPC) have been held under 10 runs only twice this year, both times by Mullen — the first time was a 6-3 Blue Devil win.

“They outplayed us and deserved to win,” Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said. “We were well-prepared, but we just didn’t get the key hits, and we just couldn’t bunch the hits we did get.”

G-A tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Bailey Leckron belted a home run, which equaled the solo shot from Ship’s Olivia Lebitz in the first.

Ship (7-3, 6-2 MPC) took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run double by Alexis Kitner. The Lady Hounds added three more in the top of the seventh, aided by Mullen’s 2-RBI base hit.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Devils scored twice. Leckron and Alexis Jones walked to lead off and Caroline Logsdon loaded the bases with a hit. Zhen Reuter hit an RBI single and Meadow Gambacurta brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, but Mullen got two flyouts to end the game.

Mullens, Lebitz and Kalia Soverns each had two hits for Ship.

Ethan Ford

BASEBALL
Shippensburg 8, Greencastle-Antrim 3: The Greyhounds plated 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning to gain control early and defeated the Blue Devils in a Mid Penn Colonial game at Ship on Wednesday afternoon.

“Ship did a really good job of putting the ball in play and getting key hits,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “They also played great defense — their rightfielder (Ayden Estep) made one of the best catches I’ve seen in high school ball in the seventh — he just laid out for it.”

For the Blue Devils (3-4, 2-3 MPC), Logan Shifflett was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ethan Ford went 2-for-4 and Avery Horst had a run batted in.

“We had the bases loaded twice late in the game, but we didn’t hit with guys in scoring position,” Shaner said. “We struck out eight times, including a couple with a runner on third and less than two outs.”

Brady Maciejewski earned the win for the Hounds, while Landon Huth took the loss. Eli Bailey was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for Ship (8-2, 6-2 MPC).
