Chambersburg roundup: Baseball, softball gain wins, boys lax hits milestone

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 7, Red Land 2: After struggling for five straight games, the Trojans’ offense took off Tuesday for a Mid Penn Commonwealth home win over the Patriots.

Wyatt Martin

Chambersburg (3-4, 1-3 MPC) struck for 10 hits, and a five-run bottom of the fourth inning proved to be the difference.

“We’ll certainly take this win,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “We got some guys on base (in the fourth) and we finally got some of the big hits we haven’t been able to get. I think it took the weight off our shoulders and we took some good at-bats the rest of the game.”

Jake Folmar led off the fourth with a walk and Chambersburg loaded the bases on singles by Chase Stenger and Aaron Vasquez. Wyatt then lined a single to left field and two runs scored to tie the game 2-2. Evan Brown then doubled to left to bring in the go-ahead run, and Brady Deneen delivered a two-run hit, a double to centerfield, to plate the final two runs.

The Trojans added some insurance in the fifth with two more runs. Folmar was hit by a pitch, Stenger singled and Vasquez bunted them to second and third. Folmar scored on an error and Deneen singled to knock in his third run of the game.

The bottom three batters of the Trojan lineup (Stenger, Vasquez and Martin) produced 5 hits and 4 runs scored.

Coach Folmar said, “We messed with the order a little, but those guys produced for us today. Hitting can be contagious and we saw some confidence in the box today.”

Joey Diaz pitched well to earn the victory. He threw 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks and a pair of runs while striking out 7. Ryan Schellhase closed the win out with a 1-hit seventh.

“Joey was very good in his second straight outing,” Folmar said. “He kept a good pace and kept them off-balance.”

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 5, Red Land 3: The Trojans used a 4-run top of the fifth inning to take the lead over the Patriots and held on for a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Tuesday afternoon in Lewisberry, and Samantha Paetow reached another personal milestone.

Marley Onomastico

“I thought we became a better team today, because the bottom of the order came through and everybody contributed,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “I’m hoping we can get in a groove and play some games because it’s been tough to find consistency with all the long layoffs (with rainouts).”

Morgan Lehman led off the big fifth with a walk and Malia Cramer bunted her to second. The first run scored when Marley Onomastico belted a double to right and Brooke Leedy’s double brought in Onomastico to lift the Trojans ahead, 3-2.

After an intentional walk to Bree Paetow, Karley Skultety singled to load the bases. A walk to Samantha Paetow scored the third run and a grounder by Addison Gsell plated the final run.

The RBI by Paetow was the 100th of her career, and she is believed to be only the second Trojan to get 100 runs batted in and 100 hits (which she reached last week), Tara Harmon achieved that feat in 2016.

In the top of the first, Bree Paetow bunted for a base hit and went to second on a throwing error. She scored on a single by Samantha Paetow.

Skultety said, “I’m proud of the girls and how they stayed calm and battled. I attribute that to all the big games this team has been involved in over the years.”

Kori Leedy pitched the first 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on a walk and 4 hits. Saleen Null hurled the final 2 and gave up a home run in the seventh. Bree Paetow went 3-for-3 and Onomastico was 2-for-3.

BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 11, Carlisle 8: The Trojans achieved a milestone Tuesday night at Trojan Stadium, capturing the program’s first win over the Thundering Herd in either boys or girls lacrosse.

Kristian Freeman

The Mid Penn Commonwealth win snapped a 6-game skid for Chambersburg (2-6, 1-3 MPC).

“It wasn’t our most disciplined game defensively, but by far it was the most disciplined game offensively we’ve played all year,” Trojan coach Joey Wilmot said. “Every game we take ill-advised shots and a ton of all-advised, forced passes, but today I don’t think we took more than one bad shot.”

Ryan Cosey led the offense with 5 goals and an assist and had several groundballs. Sam Kunkleman scored a goal and contributed 4 assists. Riley Harmon had 2 goals and 2 assists and won 50% of the faceoffs. Also, Logan Mulkey had 2 goals and Garrett Iser scored once.

Wilmot said, “Jackson Beardsley didn’t do a lot stat-wise, but he played Carlisle’s best player, Isaac Beals, who had probably scored half of their goals this year. He scored the first goal of the game, but didn’t score the rest of the game. Jackson locked him down.

“Our goalie, Kristian Freeman, did a nice job of leading us in the clear game. It’s nice to have a goalie we can count on to help us get the ball to our offense.”

GIRLS LACROSSE
Carlisle 14, Chambersburg 4: The Trojans put up a fight against the Thundering Herd in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game on Tuesday evening on the road, but still took their seventh straight defeat.

“We played really hard tonight and made some major improvements from last week,” Chambersburg coach Keara Allshouse said. “We played our hearts out during every second of the game.”

The goal scorers for the Trojans (1-7, 0-3 MPC) included Gabriella Sabatino, McKenna Myers, Mara Costello and Reagan Barrett, while Sabatino was credited with an assist.
