Trojans’ Hight picks up 10-4 win in PIAA quarterfinals

HERSHEY — Confidence on his feet is carrying Chambersburg senior Aiden Hight.

Hight worked his way into Friday night’s PIAA Wrestling Championships semifinals at 215 pounds with a four-takedown, 10-4 victory over Rocco Serafini of Central Mountain at Giant Center on Friday afternoon.

Combined with three takedowns he recorded before a pin in 1:14 in the first round, Hight has a 7-0 advantage on his feet so far at states.

“Being on my feet is my most confident position,” Hight said. “I felt good coming into this week. I feel like I can take down anybody in the country.”

He will need every bit of that confidence in the semifinals, where he will face Dillon Bechtold of Owen J. Roberts for the third time this year. Hight lost by pin in an early December tournament, although he had Bechtold on his back before that. Bechtold won by major decision in the Trojan Wars final in late December.

Bechtold is 40-0 and the No. 1 seed at 215. The semifinal round begins at 7 p.m.

“The first time was kind of back-and-forth, and he beat me bad the second time,” Hight said. “He’s got strength and speed and pretty good technique.”

But with the way Hight can generate scoring from his feet, he always has a puncher’s chance.

Against Serafini, Hight’s first takedown came 1:00 in, when he tied up upper body, then dropped to a single-leg attack and scored on the edge. Hight let Serafini up and took him down again, and another escape made it 4-2 after one period.

In the second period, Hight chose down and scored on a roll-through reversal. In the third, two more Serafini escapes were followed by Hight takedowns.

Hight, who had wrestled Serafini before, said, “I knew some of his moves from before; like I know I had to watch his sweep on the left side.”
