HERSHEY — Aiden Hight did not overthink his first bout at the PIAA Class 3A Wrestling Championships.

The Chambersburg senior wasted no time in piling up a 6-2 lead over Geno Calgaro of Canon-MacMillan, who entered the match with a 22-1 record, then pinned Calgaro in just 1:14 at Giant Center.

Sometimes PIAA matches become tense, conservative and tactical in nature. In the age of video, nobody has a secret.

But Hight is not so much interested in what his opponent might do, but about opportunities he sees pop up in a bout.

“Again, if I see something, I’m gonna go for it,” Hight said. “I never really have a game plan. All I knew was he was a big, strong guy.”

It took only seconds for Hight to open the scoring, when he snapped Calgaro’s head and spun behind for a takedown. He let Calgaro up, then brought him down with a lateral drop that landed in-bounds for a takedown, but took the wrestlers across the line.

Hight let his opponent up again to make it 4-2, then used another upper body throw to toss Calgaro to the mat.

This time, they landed in bounds and stayed there, and Hight took his time to squeeze Calgaro tight and stick him in just 1:14.

“I just want to go out and have fun,” said Hight, a North Dakota State commit.

Mission accomplished on Thursday.

Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “He wrestled a very good Canon-Mac and District 7 kid and he dominated him. Now it’s on to tomorrow.”

In Friday afternoon’s quarterfinals, which begin at 2:15, Hight (33-3) will face Central Mountain’s Rocco Serafini (39-6), who won 4-2 over Kurtis Crossman of Easton.

Hight is the only area wrestler to qualify for states this year.
