WAYNESBORO — For the second straight night, Chambersburg’s opponent played the Trojans tough in the first half.
But for the second straight game, that opponent could not hold off Chambersburg in the second half. Saturday evening, in the second day of the Franklin County vs. Everyone Tournament, it was Bishop McDevitt that succumbed, 63-37, at Waynesboro.
The Trojans (2-0) outscored the Crusaders (1-1) 30-12 in the latter half.
“There was a moment in the first half when we had a chance to separate, but we didn’t finish it,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said.
The Trojans took a 30-18 lead in the second quarter on two free throws by Landon Buhrman. But McDevitt scored 7 of the final 10 points of the half, with Buhrman’s three the only Chambersburg points. Then, after consecutive 3-pointers by ace guard Jacobi Tate (20 points), McDevitt crawled to within 42-35 more than halfway through the third quarter.
That’s when Jermere Jones put his mark on the game. He scored 9 of his 11 points in the third quarter, including 7 in a row to end the period, bumping the Trojans’ lead to 49-35. He got some great feeds, mostly from Colton Cornwell and Ari Snyder, and did not miss a shot in that stretch.
Chambersburg then outscored the Crusaders 14-2 in the fourth.
Shreffler said, “We wanted to get out and run more and Jermere did that well. Ari (Snyder) was great in transition and our guards ran the floor well. I thought our pace created opportunities for us, even when playing in the half court.”
“We beat them down the court a lot,” Jones said. “Their transition defense couldn’t stop us, and our guards made good plays. I think we got more confidence and trusted each other more in this game.”
J.J. Kelly led Chambersburg with 18 points, Cornwell posted 14 — including a trio of treys — and Buhrman added 13.
Shreffler said, “I thought our guys competed well. We had four guys in double figures and that’s really important.”
