Trojans go 2-3: Chambersburg competed in the Spring Grove Duals Tournament on Saturday and ended up wrestling five very close meets, but the Trojans were defeated in three of them.
The wins came over the host Rockets (35-34) and Loyola-Blakefield (34-33), while the Trojans (3-4) lost to Northern York (37-33), Boiling Springs (36-31) and Hempfield (34-26).
“We could have very easily been 5-0,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “Not happy. We have got to get better.”
The only Chambersburg wrestler to go 5-0 for the day was Ashton Romberger at 133 pounds, including 3 pins and a major decision.
Six other Trojans put up 4-1 records — Jaccob Stoner (189, 3 pins, major); Aiden Hight (215, 2 pins); Frank Barrientos (285, 3 pins); Ben Hoover (107, 1 pin, 1 major); Zach Sherman (121, 1 pin, 1 tech fall); and Tyler Frye (145, 1 pin, 1 tech fall).
Hight was pinned by Northern’s Cole Bartram, a PIAA runner-up last year.
The Trojans tied the match against vs. Loyola-Blakefield on a decision by Romberger, and won it on a tiebreaker. In the win over Spring Grove, he final match came at 152 and Logan Mickey won a 7-2 decision to push his team ahead.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Trojans go 0-2 in tourney: Chambersburg played a pair of games over the weekend in the Franklin County vs. Everyone Tournament and were defeated 44-37 on Friday by Red Lion, and 57-44 by Bishop McDevitt on Saturday.
On Friday, Chambersburg (1-3) could not stop Grace Masser, who hit four 3-pointers and tallied 26 points for the Lions.
The Trojans were hurt by a 17-9 deficit in the second quarter. T.T. Kelly hit 8 of 10 from the free throw line and scored all 10 of her points in the second half. Emily Forrester had 9 points and Bree Paetow 7 for Chambersburg.
In the Saturday game, Riley Evans scored a career-high 12 points, Kelly produced 8 of her 11 points in the second half and Paetow had 9 points on a trio of 3-pointers.
For the Crusaders, Sophia Formica led with 21 points and Olivia Girella added 19.
