Blazers score late to top Shalom, 2-1

The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers secured the No. 2 seed in next week’s Mason Dixon Christian Conference playoffs by scoring a late goal to beat Shalom Christian 2-1 Friday in the final regular-season MDCC matchup for both teams.

Sophomore Titus Hott drilled in the game-winner on a free kick in the 79th minute after Shalom’s goalkeeper was called for handling the ball while kicking outside the 18-yard line. It was Hott’s third game-winning goal in a week.

After a scoreless first half, Landon Kellogg broke the tie for the Blazers (15-3-1, 9-3 MDCC). Brady Emge tied it for Shalom (10-2 MDCC) to set up the late drama.

“Player of the game, Preston ‘Peddy’ Hammond, was the standout performer,” Blazers coach Stan Hott said. “His quick reflexes and impeccable defense shut down the Flames’ front line.”

Cort Stouffer and Gage Brookens added assists for the Blazers. Goalkeeper Gabe Beckering was credited with 28 saves.

The Blazers will host seventh-seeded New Life in the first round of the playoffs next week. Shalom, the regular-season champion whose only two losses were to the Blazers, drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Calvary-Faith quarterfinal matchup.
