Altoona ground game eats up Trojans, 25-7

ALTOONA — Altoona fullback Bron Mosley probably watched the tape of Chambersburg’s loss to Cumberland Valley last and smiled.

He saw CV running back Bryce Staretz slice through the Trojans’ defense for 256 yards and two scores.

Riley Harmon

Mosley upped the ante Friday night in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Mansion Park, carrying 37 times for 277 yards and three scores in the Mountain Lions’ 25-7 beat down of the Trojans.

Mosley runs the dive play in Altoona’s triple option attack and with that play working for most of the night, the Mountain Lions didn’t need much else. Altoona did not have any yards passing and the rest of the team ran for just 24 yards.

“We just couldn’t stop the dive,” Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. “We shut down everything else they tried, but we are just not strong enough in the interior. Other teams are bigger and stronger and that’s not good for any football team.”

The Trojans put together perhaps their best drive of the season to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Starting at their own 2, they took eight plays to cover the 98 yards, with passes from Riley Harmon to Rhaigeon Parker covering 41 yards and then the last 36.

On the TD play, Harmon saw a big rush coming and floated a perfect pass down the right sideline to Parker, who had two steps on his defender.

But that was the last time Chambersburg scored.

Luther said, “The next time we got the ball (after an Altoona fumble), RIley underthrew Rhaigeon on a pass — we should have up 14-0.”

Instead, the Mountain Lions took over on their 31. Sixteen plays later — including 13 runs by Mosley — a 5-yard run by Mosley made it 7-6 (the extra point was botched) wit just 1:01 left in the half.

Then came perhaps the biggest play of the game. Altoona called a time out when Chambersburg had to punt from its own 25 and then the Trojans called a timeout, too, sensing an all-out rush to try to block the punt.

But Altoona won the battle, blocking the kick after Trever Luther fielded a low snap, and the bouncing ball fell into the hands of Josiah Treece at the 4. He ran it in and suddenly, the Lions had a 12-7 lead with 0:13 left in the half.

There is nothing a dive-running, no-pass team loves more than a lead and the Mountain Lions did what they needed to do in the second half.

Altoona capitalized after recovering a Trojan fumble at the Chambersburg 15, with Mosley scoring from 7 yards out.

The next time they got the ball, they were backed up to their own 3 on a punt by Ceagan Truett.

But after two short Mosley runs, he busted through a gaping hole and ran 90 yards for the clinching touchdown.

The Mountain Lions’ offense was about as basic as could be, but it got the job done.

Coach Luther said, “They were able to run that dive and move the ball. On the other side, we can’t get anything on the ground inside, so teams are playing hard to the outside and taking that option away.”

Harmon completed 11 of 19 passes for 153 yards, including 5 for 95 yards to Parker. But he was also sacked three times for 16 yards. The Trojans managed just 21 net yards on the ground.

Chambersburg hosts Central Dauphin East next Friday night.
