Shippensburg gets first win

The Shippensburg Greyhounds picked up their first win of the season Friday with a 14-6 win over visiting Spring Grove.

After Jaden Hines 31 yard kickoff return set the Hounds up at their own 42, Aydin Mentzer hit a wide open Kaden Shope for a 58 yard score.  The play started with Mark Carothers jr. taking a pitch to the left on a sweep action.  Carothers jr. then hand the ball off to Mentzer coming back to the right and he hit a wide open Shope for the touchdown.   Wed Delpe added the PAT for a 7-0 lead just 25 seconds in.

On the Hounds third possession they got as far as the Rockets three, but turned the ball over on downs.  Spring Grove went for a fourth and two, by Shope on a stunt through Carter Smith for a four yard loss to get the ball back.

The Hounds offense responded with an eight play 65 yard drive.   The big play in the drive was a Brady Maciejewski 42 yard pass to Shope down to the four.  Maciejewski was under pressure and under thru Shope who made the adjustment to haul it in around the 20 before being brought down at the four.  It took the Hounds four plays to punch it in, but they did on a Ja’nye Statum one yard plunge and a 14-0 half time lead.

Spring Grove’s only score came on their first possession of the second half Cowan Ruhland hit Nizeah Mummert on post pattern, Mummert split the Hounds safety and linebacker and sprinted 70 yards for the score.

Shippensburg was searching for the icing score, but it never came.  They did, however, have a key 13 play 45 yard drive that ended at the Rocket 10.  Patrick Eichelberger rumbled for 13 yards on the drive and Statum picked up two key first downs.  Carothers jr. scampered for 27 yards, but a 10 yard illegal block in the back and a false start for 5 thwarted the drive.

The Hounds defense did their job in the fourth keeping the Rockets from threatening.

Eichelberger lead the Hounds 130 yard rushing attack with 84 yards.  The Hounds defense held Spring Grove to 18 yards rushing and 119 passing.

The Greyhounds struggled their first two games pickup up first downs (8 total), but managed 10 in Fridays contest.  Shippensburg also were 0-19 on third downs entering the contest, but were 3-10.  On the defensive side Cody Wenner had nine solo tackles to lead the Hounds.  Shope added six and Noah Garvin 5.  Shope had two tackles for loss and Christian Wenner added a sack.

Up next is league play and a home game with Northern this Friday.
