Greencastle moves to 3-0 win win over Squires

McSHERRYSTOWN — Greencastle-Antrim survived a long delay for lightning and a stubborn Delone Catholic football team to push its record to 3-0 on Friday night.

The game was delayed for over 90 minutes late in the first half, and had another delay early in the third quarter when the Squires’ quarterback, Denver Ostrum, was injured and had to be put in an ambulance.

“We had the ball on their 12 with about four minutes left in the second quarter when they stopped the game,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “We came back out and scored (on a 2-yard run by QB Logan Alvey) to go up 21-14.

“I think we handled the delay well. We only took three minutes for halftime, and I think we were a different team in the second half. We seemed more motivated, which is the sign of a mature team. We stayed focused and got a win on the road against a tough team.”

Greencastle held a 28-21 lead, helped by a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Trent Merrillat, and a 33-yard scoring pass from Alvey to Blake Diller, and had Delone (0-3) on the ropes early in the fourth quarter with a first down at the Squires’ 1-yard line.

But Alvey was stopped for no gain, and fullback Logan Shifflett was thrown for a loss and on the play, G-A was called for a face mask penalty. Later, a field goal try was missed.

“That didn’t help — we could have sealed the deal there,” McCauley said.

But the defense stopped Delone and the offense worked its way down the field, chewing up the clock, and then iced the game when Shifflett bulled into the end zone from short range with 3:03 left.

McCauley said, “I feel like we were wearing them down in the second half. We mixed the run and the pass well. Alvey made good decisions on his passes and he threw the ball well on the run.”

Alvey finished 13-for-17 in the passing department, for 165 yards, one TD and one interception. Surzano Solomon, who scored the Blue Devils’ first touchdown, led the rushers with 9 carries for 69 yards.

Greencastle makes the short trip to Waynesboro to face the Indians next Friday.
