Runs are scarce in 2-1 Trojan win over Huskies

FAYETTEVILLE — A day after rolling up 18 runs in the space of three innings, Chambersburg’s softball team found themselves in a different kind of game.

But the Trojans did just enough on offense, the defense held firm and pitcher Kylee Miller made good pitches at the right time to pull out a 2-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over Mifflin County at Norlo Park.

Jaden Stull’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second inning provided the runs Chambersburg (15-2, 10-2 MPC) needed, but the other highlight came from Sam Paetow.

Paetow, a junior catcher, lined a single up the middle in her first at-bat, and in her second she bounced a shot off the fence in left field for a double. That hit was the 100th of her stellar career.

“In that second at-bat, I was just trying to hit the ball hard,” she said. “I had no clue it was the 100th. It feels like all the hard work I’ve put in has paid off.”

Paetow is having a fabulous season, hitting close to .600 with 20 runs batted in.

“I’ve probably been hitting more line drives than I ever have,” she said.

The Trojans managed only five hits off Huskies pitcher Arika Henry, who is actually their No. 2 hurler.

Jaden Stull

“I’m not at all upset at our swings,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “We hit the ball hard. Sometimes you get in a game and they just don’t fall in; I mean, you can’t have 15-16 hits every game. And they made some nice plays on defense.”

Mifflin County (10-6, 5-6 MPC) got on the board in the top of the first inning. Riley Hines cued an infield hit to first, but was picked off by Paetow. Henry followed with a base hit and Dakota Hershberger then ripped a double to right-centerfield to score Hine.

But Miller got out of it with no further damage. The Huskies had runners in scoring position three more times — including having the bases loaded with one out in the fourth — but couldn’t score.

“Ky wasn’t quite as sharp as usual, but the defense played really well,” Skultety said.

In Chambersburg’s second inning, Morgan Stockslager and Abagail Newman hit back-to-back solid singles. A fielder’s choice grounder by Carly Benedict moved them up and Stull bounced a single to right field.

Skultety said, “Props to Jaden. She’s been putting the bat on the ball lately and came up with a clutch hit.”

Henry didn’t have any strikeouts, but she also issued no walks and the defense made only one harmless error.

NOTES: The Trojans have three games left in the regular season — Thursday at Red Land, Friday at home vs. Greencastle-Antrim and Monday at Mifflin County … Chambersburg currently holds the No. 1 ranking in District 3 … Skultety said Saleen Null had a good game at third base, handling three chances … Miller allowed 8 hits and 2 walks and struck out 5.
