SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 14, Altoona 3: The Trojans racked up 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Mountain Lions in 5 innings at Norlo Park on Thursday afternoon.

Jaden Stull

Sam Paetow was the catalyst on offense, getting 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, including two doubles and a triple, and she drove in 3 runs.

Addison Gsell wasn’t far behind with a 3-for-3 performance, with a double and 2 RBIs, Karley Skultety was 2-for-3 with 2 runs knocked in and Saleen Null was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI..

“It sure was nice to get our feet in the dirt after eight days of not playing a game,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “This was a great way to start a tough stretch of seven games in nine days (and six in seven days).

“The girls came out swinging in the first inning and we hit some rockets. It was good to get all 14 girls in the game today, because we are going to need everybody to be at their best for the stretch run and the playoffs.”

Kori Leedy (2-0) got the start and went 2.2 innings, giving up just 1 hit, to earn the win. Null threw 1.1 innings and gave up 2 earned runs and Kylee Miller threw the final inning, allowing 1 hit.

Also at the plate, Bree Paetow smacked a triple and Carly Benedict hit a double. Bree Paetow, Morgan Stockslager, Benedict, Abagail Newman and Jaden Stull each had one run driven in.

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 7, Altoona 7: The Trojans and Mountain Lions were locked up in a tie after eight innings when the Mid Penn Commonwealth game was suspended for darkness at Greene Township Park.

Joey Diaz

It will be determined next week whether or not the game will be completed.

The reason for the lengthy game was that pitchers on both teams issued 11 walks.

“We were not sharp on the mound today,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “We scored five runs in the first inning, but we let them claw back in it. In addition to the 11 free bases, they got 10 hits. And we threw four guys today who won’t be able to pitch tomorrow.

“Joey Diaz did come in for the last out of the sixth and then threw the seventh and eighth and shut them out and struck out six. He did a nice job.”

In the first inning for the Trojans (4-11), four of the first five batters walked, with Logan Draper getting an RBI. A Jake Folmar single scored a run, and the other runs scored on a walk to Eli Metzger, a walk to Bryce Folmar and a sacrifice fly by Brady Deneen.

Trailing by a run heading to the bottom of the sixth, Jason Cunha reached on an error, Carter Fogal walked and Diaz was hit by a pitch. After an out, Jake Folmar singled to bring in the tying run.

Coach Folmar said, “Once again we had plenty of opportunities, but didn’t get many big hits. We’d get one run, but could have had a few more.”

Jake Folmar was 3-for-4 for the Trojans and Fogal walked 4 times.
