Chambersburg roundup: Baseball, softball earn wins over SC

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 2, State College 0: Ryan Schellhase and Bryce Folmar combined to fire a 5-hit shutout and the Trojans defeated the Little Lions for the second time this season in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game in State College on Wednesday afternoon.

Schellhase went the first 4 innings, giving up only 2 hits and a pair of walks and struck out 2. Folmar entered and allowed 3 hits and 1 walk and struck out 2 to get a save.

“I can’t say enough about our pitchers today,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “Ryan got his first start and continued to do what he’s been doing all year — he pounded the strike zone and kept them off-balance with his breaking stuff and made them put the ball in play.

“Bryce worked out of a jam in the fifth and did a great job finishing the game.”

Bryce Folmar

The Trojans (3-10, 2-7 MPC) finally got to State College starter Sam Kanik in the top of the fifth inning. Joey Diaz got it started with a ground single to left field, then was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Jake Folmar.

Diaz raced home on a single to left by Chase Stenger. Brady Deneen ran for Stenger and moved to third when Wyatt Kissel hit a single to left. Brandon Pattillo then got the job done with a fly ball to center field that scored Deneen and made it 2-0.

Coach Folmar said, “That was a really big pinch hit by Stenger in that inning to score a run, and a good quality at-bat by Pattillo. Those were a couple of the kind of at-bats that we have been missing in those situations throughout the year.”

In the bottom of the fifth, a base hit by the Little Lions’ leadoff man caused coach Folmar to take out Schellhase and insert Bryce Folmar. He gave up a single, but then got a fly out and a double play. On a grounder to Diaz at third, he threw to Kissel at first base for an out, then Kissel’s throw caught the runner trying to reach third base.

In the seventh, State College got a one-out walk and a double, but Folmar got the final two batters on a strikeout looking and a pop-up to shortstop Carter Fogal.

The Trojans had 7 hits, led by Diaz and Tyler Brechbiel with two each.

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 2, State College 1: The Trojans got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon by edging the Little Lions in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Norlo Park.

Carly Benedict

“I told the girls even though we didn’t hit great, I was extremely proud of them because we stuck together and grinded out a tough mid-season win,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “This game just had an awkward feeling of ho hum and not a lot of energy by both teams. Last year we lost these games because we were not together as one.”

Kylee Miller (8-1) pitched a strong game for Chambersburg (10-2, 7-2 MPC). She went the distance, giving up only 5 hits, no earned runs and struck out 7.

The Trojans managed to score in only one inning, the fifth. With one out, Carly Benedict drew a walk — her 15th of the season — and moved to second on a passed ball. Jaden Stull lined a base hit to left, putting Benedict on third and courtesy runner Brooke Leedy on first.

Leedy stole second base to put runners on second and third. Another passed ball enabled Benedict to scoot home and Leedy moved to third. Bree Paetow grounded to shortstop and beat the throw to first when the shortstop hesitated while looking at Leedy running home.

Skultety said, “Today we stayed positive and got it done despite not being at our best. Carly’s walk and Jaden’s big hit allowed us to get our running game going and that was the difference.”

Joseph Stopyra

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
State College 3, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans were on form defensively Wednesday evening in a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat to the Little Lions on the road, but the offense did not catch up.

“We continue to play good defense,” Chambersburg coach Ray Frazer said, “but struggle to put a ball away offensively. We need to get more aggressive at the net and earn points. Joseph Stopyra did have a good night at the net with six kills and a couple of heads-up plays to keep the ball alive.”

State College picked up wins of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16.

Reed Myers, Joseph Byers and Andrew Holtry each came up with 10 digs for Chambersburg (2-8, 1-8 MPC), and Myers had 18 assists and a block kill. Cole Leidig made 4 kills, a block kill and an ace. Byers had 5 kills and Holtry had 4, and Holtry also had one block kill.
