Spartans Shut Out Tigers

Fannett-Metal (7-5) travelled to Mcconnellsburg (8-1) for an ICC match up and fell to the Spartans by a score of 5-0.

McConnellsburg pitcher Landon Gress threw a two hit shutout to give the Spartans a solid pitching performance in the 5-0 league victory.  Gress had 6 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Gress worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning and only allowed one base runner to reach scoring position the rest of the way.

After one out, Jake Coffman reached on a single and moved to second on a passed ball.  Landon Arnold walked to put runners on first and second.  Wade Appleby lined out to center for the second out.  Adam Hammond then drew a walk to load the bases before Gress got a groundout to end the threat.

The Spartans scored two runs in the first off Tiger starter Landon Arnold.  Gavin Fowler led off with a double to right and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Andrew Mellott walked and stole second. After an out, Fowler scored on a infield ground out to make it 1-0 and Mellott came around to score on an infield error to make it 2-0.

The only other Tiger threat came in the third when Drew Goshorn led off with a single and was moved to second on a Jake Coffman sacrifice bunt.  But Gress got the next two hitters out to escape without any damage.

The Spartans would score a run in the third and two more unearned runs in the fifth to give Gress all the support he would need.

Tiger starter Landon Arnold suffered his first loss of the season.   The right hander allowed five runs(3 earned) on five hits.  He had 10 strikeouts and 4walks in fuve innings.  Relief pitcher Adam Hammond pitched a scoreless sixth.

”This is second time we have faced Gress this season and once again he shut us down.  Our pitcher threw well enough, but you are not going to win many games on two hits.  Give Mcconnellsburg credit, they made all the routine plays tonight and manufactured a few runs to put us away”, Coffman said.

The Spartans had six hits on the day.  Fowler had three hits while Mellott added a pair.  Shaeffer had the other hit.  For the Tigers, Drew Goshorn and Jake Coffman had the only two hits of the game.

The Tigers return to action on Monday when they host first place Southern Fulton in an ICC match up at 4:30.
