Trojans prevail in 9 innings for 1st baseball win

SCOTLAND — The Chambersburg baseball team was desperate for a win after starting the season 0-3.

And while you could say the Trojans didn’t exactly come out and grab a victory Tuesday afternoon at Greene Township Park, they will nevertheless happily take the nine-inning 2-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth win they received over State College.

“We just needed a win anyway we could get it, and we’ll take it,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said.

The game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth was a gift-wrapped present from the Little Lions (1-3). After an out, pitcher Sebastian Rhoades walked Bryce Folmar on four pitches and then Wyatt Kissel on eight pitches. When he threw ball one to Jason Cunha, his coach brought in Gino Pighetti in relief.

Pighetti did not fare any better, throwing three balls to Cunha to load the bases. Then, with a 1-1 count on Brady Deneen, it appeared that Pighetti and catcher Adam Cooper had a miscommunication and the fastball sailed to the backstop, allowing Bryce Folmar to score.

“It was a good team win,” coach Folmar said. “We needed this big-time. If you lose a game like this, the morale could go down, so this was a good one to get.”

The game was littered with wasted scoring opportunities on both sides.

The Trojans (1-3, 1-2 MPC) stranded 11 runners, including seven in scoring position. However, State College also has issues scoring — it left 12 runners on base, and also had seven in scoring position.

Little Lion pitchers combined to allow three hits (2 by Brandon Pattillo), but walked 11.

“We left a lot of runners on — that’s kind of been our thing so far this year,” Folmar said. “We’ve had a lot of opportunities in all four of our games, but we need to be better in those at-bats and put pressure on the defense.”

The three pitchers Chambersburg used all turned in good outings. Wyatt Kissel started, went four innings and gave up three hits. He allowed the only run in the second when Michael Gaul walked, stole second, went to third on an errant throw and scored on Cooper Ryan’s base hit.

Treyton Sarvis hurled three scoreless innings and helped himself out in the sixth. With first-and-third and one out, Jensen Chesnut hit a bullet up the middle but Sarvis snagged it and caught the runner off third base for a double play.

Camden Helman pitched the final two innings to get the win. The Little Lions had two runners on in each inning, but could not get the big hit.

Folmar said, “Our three guys on the mound were fantastic. They battled through some tough innings, but were able to work out if it.”

Chambersburg’s tying run came in the sixth inning. With one out, Deneen walked and went to third on a two-out base hit to rightfield by Sarvis. Rhoades threw to first to hold courtesy runner Logan Draper on, but the ball skipped past the first baseman and courtesy runner Gavin Mowery scored.

NOTES: State College was 5-for-6 on stolen base attempts … Cooper and Ryan each had two hits for the Little Lions … Trojan pitchers hit three batters.
