G-A roundup: Softball, baseball open with victories

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 15, Bermudian Springs 0: The Blue Devils made quick work of the Eagles in a non-league game Wednesday afternoon to open their season with a bang.

G-A scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning, 9 more in the second and produced 2 more in the third to end the game.

Sophia Layton pitched the first 2.2 innings and gave up 2 hits, and Kaidyn Zimmerman got the final out.

Greencastle (1-0) rapped out 14 hits, including two each by Mackenzie Wingert, Caroline Logsdon, Makayla Jerin, Meadow Gambacurta and Bailey Leckron.

Abby Stouffer and Leckron each hit a double, while Jerin and Gambacurta each tripled. Gambacurta and Stouffer each knocked in two runs, as 10 different Blue Devils had at least one RBI.

Greencastle-Antrim 9, Bermudian Springs 4: Aiden Grudzinski had a big day at the plate to lead the Blue Devils to a non-league win over the Eagles on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Grudzinski went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and belted a home run and a double.

Bermudian Springs had gotten to within 6-4 after six innings, but Grudzinski crushed a solo home run in the top of the seventh and Austin Wyant cracked a two-run double later in the inning.

“It was nice that when we faced a little adversity, we responded,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “We made the plays we needed to.”

Darren Kline was 2-for-3 with a double, Ethan Ford was 2-for-3 and Briggs Remenick had two hits in five at-bats.

Jace Szaflarski started and earned the win. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run. Adam Horst tossed the final 2.1 innings and allowed one hit while striking out four.
