Chambersburg roundup: Trojan boys beat Lions in OT

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 58, Altoona 56, OT: The Trojans made good use of the free throw line in the late stages of a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Altoona on Friday night and edged the Mountain Lions in overtime.

Colton Cornwell

The victory avenged a home loss to Altoona earlier. Chambersburg (11-9, 6-7 MPC) really needed win for District 3 rankings.

“I’m really proud of how we bounced back from Wednesday’s loss (to State College),” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “against a very good Altoona team. They’ve been impressive and played well in front of their home fans.”

In the fourth quarter, the Lions outscored Chambersburg 1`5-14, but made only 4 of 10 foul shots. The Trojans, meanwhile, made 5 of 7 (J.J. Kelly was 3-for-4).

In overtime, Chambersburg was 5-for-6 (Jacob Bassham 3-for-4; Carter Fogal 2-for-2) at the line and the Mountain Lions did not shoot a foul shot.

“The urgency was there from the beginning and we were much more consistent for 36 minutes,” Shreffler said. “We showed great poise late in the game, got stops and executed from the line.”

Kelly led the Trojans with 18 points and Fogal totaled 16, while Bassham and Colton Cornwell each scored 8. Ashton Neely had 17 for Altoona (7-12, 7-7 MPC).

Shreffler said, “Our captains really stepped up and got their teammates ready to play, which led to contributions from a number of players, and they performed at a high level, too.”
