Chambersburg roundup: Swim teams roll past Gaels

Chambersburg 136, St. Maria Goretti 19: The Trojans took first place in each event and rolled to a non-league victory over the Gaels on Tuesday afternoon.

“This was a phenomenal team effort,” Chambersburg coach Hali Cormany said. “Every girl was able to score points and some swam best times. It was great to see every girl participate and be successful in their swims today.

The only double individual winner was Layne Rydbom; she took the 200 IM in 2:38.37 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:24.23.

Also capturing individual victories for the Trojans (3-4) were Sarah Vessah (200 freestyle, 2:44.28), Maddie Shifler (50 free, 29.50), Abby Caltrider (100 fly, 1:12.83), Monica Kemerer (100 free, 1:22.33), Chase Johnson (400 free, 5:36.04) and Kayla Wolfe (1:18.81).

Cormany said, “It was Senior Night and the seniors, Chace and Layne, ended their swimming at home with some wins.”

The 200 medley team of Caltrider, Rydbom, Johnson and Shifler won in 2:17.25; the 200 free relay team of McKenzie Wicks, Wolfe, Lauren Markle and Caltrider won in 2:02.92, and the 400 free team of Caltrider, Vessah, Hailey Fegan and Margot Ritchie came in first with a time of 4:38.26.

Chambersburg 111, St. Maria Goretti 52: The Trojans earned wins in all three relay races and added six individual victories to post a non-league victory over the Gaels at the Chambersburg YMCA on Tuesday afternoon.

Chambersburg (6-1) split the events up, with six different individuals picking up wins.

The winners included Tom McCullough in the 200 IM (2:47.98), Brandon Estep in the 50 freestyle (27.33), Alex Kaczmark in the 100 fly (1:01.59), Keagan Myers in the 100 free (1:31.72), Derek Estep in the 400 free (4:20.36) and Jed Ritchie in the 100 backstroke (1:07.65).

Ritchie, Brandon Estep, Kaczmark and Derek Estep won the 200 medley relay in 2:00.03; Colby Evans, Xavier Covington, Mason Diehl and Myers took the 200 free relay in 1:57.91 and Ritchie, Myers, McCullough and Kaczmark combined for a win in the 400 free relay in 4:17.02.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
State College 65, Chambersburg 39: The Little Lions had a good shooting night, making nine 3-point shots, and that was too much for the Trojans, who dropped a Mid Penn Commonwealth game on the road Tuesday.

At the same time, Chambersburg (5-14, 4-8 MPC) made only 8 of 24 free throws.

Lily Cornwell scored 14 points and Bree Paetow had 10 for the Trojans, hitting a total of five 3-pointers between them.

For State College, Jordyn Steindl  tallied 21 points, including draining 5 threes.
