Shippensburg comes back to defeat Northern

Shippensburg freshman Cole Trn drained a pair of free throws to give the Hounds the lead with 4.8 seconds left in Tuesday’s contest with Northern. The Polar Bears half court heave was high and long securing the Greyhounds 52-51 win over Northern Tuesday at Shippensburg.

The two teams were tied after one 13-13.  Trn finally got the Hounds on the board with a three pointer from the win to cut the lead to 4-3.  Jackson Stought drained a pair of threes to tie it at 9-9 with 2:34 left in the quarter.  Shippensburg took a brief lead at 13-11, but with 20 seconds left Northern tied the contest.

A 15-9 difference put the visitors up 28-22 at the break.  The Hounds shot just 3-13 in the second quarter as the Polar Bears shot 5-15.  Gavin Moyer and Sam Gunning tallied seven points each for the Polar Bears at the break. 

Northern grew the lead to ten points midway thru the third, but the Hounds finished on a 7-0  run to close it by three.  Trae Kater had seven of the Hounds 11 points in the quarter, including completing a three point play with 5.4 left to trim it to three.

Northern pushed the lead to eight with 3:43 left, but again the Hounds outscored the Polar Bears 15-6 down the stretch.  Stought and Jackson completed three point plays to trim the lead to two at the 3:07 mark.  Andrew Bream put the visitors up 49-46 with 1:29 left.  Mason Fogelsonger’s open layup put the Hounds in front 50-49 with :37 left.  Ryan Wagner’s two free throws put Northern back in front by one with 13.3 left.  That set up Trn’s winner as he drove the baseline and drew a blocking foul to go to the line for the win.

Shippensburg comeback saw hot shooting from the field and perfect at the line   The Hounds hit 6-9 from the field 6-6 from the stripe in the fourth.  Northern was 3-8 from the field and 5-6 from the line in the fourth.  Northern also turned the ball over ten times in the second half with six coming in the crucial fourth quarter.  The Hounds had six turnovers in the second half with three in each.

Kater and Stought tallied 14 each for the Hounds with Trnadding 11.  Moyer with 14 lead Northern.

For the game the Polar Bears shot 15-44 (36%) from the field and 14-20 (70%) from the line.  Shippensburg was 19-45 (42.2%) from the field 9-10 (90%) from the line.  Shippensburg held a 25-24 edge on the boards.

The Hounds next game is Friday at James Buchanan.
