INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Trojans capture 7 wins: Chambersburg’s indoor track & field athletes competed at the Mercersburg Academy Invitational on Saturday and brought back 7 gold medals.
J.J. Kelly was a winner of three events, the long jump, triple jump and high jump. The high jump effort (6-4) and the triple jump (46-10) were school indoor records. He also qualified for the PTFCA indoor states in all three events (his long jump was 21-11).
Also for the boys, Jermere Jones won the 55 hurdles, Aiden Alleman took first in the 3200 and Peter Mertz captured the shot put.
Jones’s time in the 55 (9.75) qualified him for states. Teammate Darion Baumgartner currently holds the best time at 7.38.
Ashley Gunkelman won the girls shot put for Chambersburg.
Trojan coach Bob Walker said, “We took 53 athletes to Mercersburg, which is the most we’ve even taken, and we had 34 personal-best performances. Back in 1998, I was working with three athletes during the winter, and now we’ve had up to 100 participants in training sessions.”
Chambersburg will compete in the PTFCA event at Lehigh on Feb. 11 and states at Penn State on Feb. 15.
