Big second half carries Gettysburg over Shippensburg

By JD DAVIDSON
The Gettysburg Warriors shot 57% from the field and made all 13 free throws in the second half to down the Shippensburg Greyhounds 61-46.  In a key Colonial Division showdown and District 3 playoff points the Hounds were ice cold in the first and fourth quarters shooting (5-26, 19%) which hindered their cause.

Gettysburg jumped out to a 13-5 lead after one.  Neither team was on fire early as Shippensburg knotted the score 2-2 at the 4:22 mark as Mason Fogelsonger scored coming off the bench. Josh Herr’s three pointer near the end of the quarter put the Warriors up 13-5.

Shippensburg rebound with a strong shooting second quarter (50%) to tie the game at the break 22-22.  Jackson Stought pumped in five points, Cole Trn and Fogelsonger added four each in the quarter.  At the break Ian McClean lead the Warriors with 11 points.

The teams exploded for 40 combined points in the third with Gettysburg taking a 44-40 lead into the fourth.  Herr’s old fashioned three point play pushed the lead to seven at 51-44 and the Hounds never got closer.

Gettysburg shot 4-5 from the field in the fourth and made all nine free throws to ice the game.

McClean paced the Warriors with 21, Herr added 19 and Tegan Kuhns added 10.  Stought was the only Hound in double figures with 14.

Shippensburg held a slight 27-26 edge on the boards.  Gettysburg had 18 turnovers and the Hounds 15.  The Hounds shot 36% from the field (20-55) and and 21% from three (3-14).  The Warriors were 20-35 from the field 3-6 from three.

Up next for the Hounds is a trip to Greencastle on Friday.
