CHAMBERSBURG — A three-bout winning streak midway through Tuesday night’s non-league wrestling match at CASHS Field House brought Waynesboro even with Chambersburg, 18-18, with five matches left.
But the Trojans were favored in each of the final five bouts and they each came through with maximum points, getting four pins and a forfeit to ring up a 48-18 victory.
Aiden Hight started it off with a pin in 3:23 at 189, then Zach Evans added fuel to the fire by catching James Crutchfield in a textbook lateral drop to end his bout in 1:07.
At 185, Avery Kuhns used a front trip to deck his opponent, Ben Hoover took a forfeit at 107 and Zach Sherman ended the match with the quickest pin of the night, taking just 38 seconds to finish his man at 114.
“Most of our kids performed as they should have,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said.
Chambersburg (8-1) started the match with pins by Rylan Carter at 121 and Luke Mentzer at 127. But the Indians (7-6) won four of the next six bouts to tie the score.
At 133, Jayden Rooney broke open a tied match in the third period with an escape and a late takedown to beat the Trojans’ Ashton Romberger.
Garrett Lowans won a wild affair at 152 over Noah Valentine, 9-7. The two traded leads, with Valentine leading 5-4 after two, and Lowans up 7-5 before giving up a tying reversal with two seconds left in regulation. But in sudden victory, a quick shot by Lowans produced a winning takedown in less than five seconds.
The Indians also got pins by Clayton Costella at 160 and Titus Mong at 172. Costella trailed 5-3 in the third when he took Ivan Mixell to his back for the fall.
Mentzer said, “I felt we left a couple out there that we should have won, like at 133, 152 and 160. Ashton just didn’t finish a takedown at the end and Ivan was ahead 5-3 in the third, then gave up a lazy takedown to go to his back and their kid was strong enough to finish it.”
Chambersburg’s two wins in that span were by Logan Mickey at 139, a 5-3 win, and Tyler Frye, a 7-3 decision that included a sharp fireman’s carry that sealed the win.
