Chambersburg roundup: Hoops teams win; swimmers rack up medals

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 68, Donegal 34: The Trojans put four players in double figures for the first time this season and it carried them to a victory over the host Indians in the third-place game at the Donegal Holiday Tournament on Thursday night.

Riley Evans

Three Chambersburg players posted career-high scoring games — Riley Evans (14), Kylee Miller (12) and Bree Paetow (10). Lily Cornwell also scored 10 points for the Trojans (2-6).

“Riley Evans gave us our first six points off the bench,” Chambersburg coach Jamiur King said, “and we needed Kylee Miller to get back to scoring and she gave us a big presence there.”

The Trojans led 27-12 by halftime and then scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to pull away.

King said, “Our guards saw the floor well, allowing us to minimize our turnovers, and all of the post players had a great game. Hailey Frankhouser started tonight and gave us an immediate spark.”

Chambersburg, with its height advantage, went to the foul line 34 times, making 22, while Donegal (2-7) made 5 of 7 at the line.

GIRLS SWIMMING
Chambersburg earns title at Bulldog Bash: The Trojans won a pair of relays and three individual events to roll to the team championship of the Bulldog Bash at Big Spring on Thursday.

Abby Caltrider

“I am so excited for the girls for their win today,” Chambersburg coach Hali Cormany said. “They came together and many contributed points for the win. Our relays had a big day, winning the medley and going 1-2 in the 200 freestyle.”

The trio of Abby Caltrider, Layne Rydbom and Maddie Shifler did a lot of damage. All three were on the winning 200 medley (2:00.92) and 200 free (1:47.40) relays, plus Caltrider won the 100 fly (1:04.39), Shifler took the 100 free (50.12) and Rydbom won the 200 IM (2:20.37).

Also, Shifler was second in the 50 free, Caltrider was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke, Lily Evans was second in the 100 free and the Trojan B team was second in the 200 free relay (Evans, McKenzie Wicks, Lauren Markel and Hailey Fegan).

Margot Ritchei was on the winning relay teams and was third in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, while Fegan took third in the 50 free.

Cormany said, “The depth we’ve gained over the last year pushed us over the edge today.”

The Trojans cored 281 points and second-place Bishop McDevitt had 178.

BOYS SWIMMING
Trojans miss 1st by just 2 points: Bishop McDevitt and Chambersburg battled for the entire meet and the Crusaders ended up winning the Bulldog Bash team title, 320 points to 318, on Thursday at Big Spring.

Derek Estep

“The boys did a great job racing fast today,” Trojan coach Chad White said. “Many of them are in the middle of tough holiday break doubles training, so the times they swam today were very good considering how tired they are.

“Derek Estep swam one of the most beautiful 200 free in-season races I have ever seen. His splits were perfect and his time (1:44.39) broke the meet and pool records.”

Estep also won the 100 fly and was on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:42.34) with Brandon Estep, Joseph Decker and Alex Kaczmark.

Other individual winners included Kaczmark in the 100 free (50.11), Jed Ritchie in the 500 free (5:06.22), Brandon Estep in the 100 backstroke (57.43) and Decker in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.52).

Ritchie was second in the 200 IM, Kaczmark placed second in the 50 free and the 200 free relay team of both Esteps, Ritchie and Kaczmark also took second. Brandon Estep was third in the IM, Xavier Covington was fourth in the backstroke and Decker was fourth in the 200 free.
