GIRLS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 59, Columbia 56: A pair of unbeaten teams met in the first round of the York Suburban Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night and the Blue Devils prevailed over a strong Tide team.
G-A will play Manheim Central, a 47-46 winner over York Suburban, in the championship game, Thursday at 7:30.
“That took everybody contributing,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. “We needed everybody to help guard their twins (Droege sisters), because they were really good. We got lots of help from Shaina Overcash, Ainsley Swindell, Aubrey Smith and Kylie Kerns and we kept the pace up, which I think eventually wore them out.”
Greencastle (7-0) fell behind Columbia (3-1) 9-2 at the start, but a three-point play by Mia Libby drew G-A to within 13-12 after one period.
Then Rylee Henson got hot from outside and she ended up hitting 5 of 10 3-point attempts for the game to tally 21 points, equaling her career high.
Eventually, G-A led by 7 points with 2 minutes left, but had to survive a big push by Columbia at the end, including a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Haley Noblit scored 18 points, had 7 rebounds and 2 assists for Greencastle, Libby had 14 points, 8 boards and 5 assists, Shaina Overcash pulled down 8 rebounds and had 4 points, and Ainsley Swindell had 7 boards and 2 points.
For the Tide, Brie Droege piled up 34 points.
