Chambersburg roundup: Girls earn 1st victory, boys crush Cougars

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 62, Harrisburg 35: The Trojans, who had scored a total of 88 points in their first five games, snapped out of it in a big way Friday night on the road against the Cougars to earn a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory.

TiTi Kelly

Chambersburg (15, 1-2 MPC) got points from 10 different players and scored at least 12 points in each quarter. The Trojans built a 32-20 lead by halftime, then won the second half, 30-17.

“The girls really shot the ball better,” Chambersburg coach Jamiur King said. “They are putting in the time before and after practice. Plus, our presence in the post allowed our guards to get better looks.”

In their last four games, the Trojans did not make any 3-pointers. Friday, however, Lily Cornwell popped in a trio of long-range shots, and Bree Paetow and Daijah Wallace each had one.

Cornwell led Chambersburg with 17 points, while TiTi Kelly put in 12 points and Paetow added 9 and Riley Evans had 8.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 55, Harrisburg 41: The Trojans won their 11th game in the last 12 against the Cougars by controlling the middle quarters and took a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory at CASHS Field House on Friday night.

Jermere Jones

Harrisburg (0-3) stayed close, with 11-10, after one quarter, helped by three 3-pointers. But Chambersburg (4-1, 2-0 MPC) used its defense to outscore the Cougars 13-5 in the second and it became a 45-29 lead after three periods.

Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, “After a slow start, our bench gave us a really big lift, which we carried through the second and third quarters to break away from a tough Harrisburg team. Our balanced scoring was fantastic — we put 10 guys in the scoring column and five had 6 or more points.”

Chambersburg did not score a basket until there was 3:25 left in the first quarter. Leading 24-15 at the half, the Trojans ran off the first 7 points of the third period to lead by 16.

Jermere Jones scored a career-high 11 points, which included 9 in the third quarter. J.J. Kelly had 10 points, Jacob Bassham 8, Sedrick Vessah 7 and Talon Brewer 6.
