BOYS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 95, State College 90: The Trojans earned four first-place finishes and enough other high places to pull out a 95-90 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Little Lions on Tuesday afternoon to open the season on a good note.
In the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, Chambersburg went 1-2, with Brandon Estep, Jed Ritchie, Xavier Covington and Thomas McCullough winning in 3:36.26 and Alex Kaczmark, Keagan Myers, Griffin Adamek and Derek Estep taking second.
“What a fantastic start to the season,” Trojan coach Chad White said. “All the boys came together for a true group effort. To my knowledge, this is the first time Chambersburg has won a meet at State College.”
Kaczmark, a freshman, had a nice debut, taking first place in the 50 free (22.86) and 100 butterfly (54.51). The other win came from Derek Estep in the 100 free (42.08).
Brandon Estep had a pair of runner-up finishes, while Derek Estep, Joesph Decker and Ritchie each had one.
White said, “It was a hard-fought meet, with the majority of the boys in the midst of some tough training. We have a very talented and deeper team tan usual, so it will be exciting to see what we can accomplish.”
GIRLS SWIMMING
State College 118, Chambersburg 62: The Little Lions showed off their depth Tuesday afternoon and picked up a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans in State College.
“State College is a very tough team and we gave it our best effort,” Chambersburg coach Hali Cormany said. “I’m excited to see what the season holds.”
The Trojans earned a pair of victories. Layne Rydbom hit the wall first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:12.95, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Maddie Shifler, Hailey Fegan, Margot Ritchie and Rydbom finished first in 3:56.76.
Lilly Evans was second in the 500 free, and the team of Shifler, Abby Caltrider, Evans and Fegan placed second in the 200 free relay.
Cormany said, “I’m proud of Layne, Margot (3rd) and Lauren (Markle, 5th) to the make the 100 breast our most competitive race. And the win by the 400 relay was a nice way to end the meet.”
BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 47, Central Dauphin 44: The Trojans outscored the Rams 17-8 in the fourth period to rally for a huge Mid Penn Commonwealth road win on Tuesday night.
“Winning in our league is hard,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “CD was well-prepared and for large portions of the game played better than us. It was a great atmosphere for our first true road game and even though we didn’t play our best, the guys found a way to walk out with a win.”
The Trojans (3-1, 1-0 MPC) trailed 36-30 entering the fourth quarter, but were helped by three 3-point shots – two by Jacob Bassham and another by Carter Fogal among his five points in the period. Sedrick Vessah also contributed four points.
J.J. Kelly led Chambersburg’s scoring with 16 points and Bassham added 15. The Rams are 1-2 (0-1 MPC).
Shreffler said, “Once again, a lot of guys contributed to our success, even though it may not show up statistically.”

Central Dauphin 44, Chambersburg 8: The Rams opened up a 28-2 halftime lead and cruised to a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Trojans on Tuesday night at CASHS Field House.
CD (2-1, 1-0 MPC) held Chambersburg (0-5, 0-2 MPC) to just one field goal for the game, that by freshman Nizaya Hawkins. Ella Parker sank 5 of 6 free throws to become the leader scorer.
