The hits just keep coming for Greencastle on the football field.
The Blue Devils, who opened the season 4-0, have now lost three straight competitive games against Mid Penn Colonial opponents. This Friday, they get to travel to Gettysburg to play the Warriors — the only unbeaten team in the Colonial — at 7 p.m. in Warrior Stadium.
“Gettysburg is a very good football team, maybe the best we’ve seen yet,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “They have a really nice defense and they run the ball well.
“They lost early (to New Oxford), but it seems like they’ve figured out who they are and they’re getting better each game. Their defense is the key and the offense has been improving.”
The game will feature a pair of 1,000-yard running backs through just seven games.
For Greencastle (4-3, 1-3 MPC), Tavon Cooper has 128 carries for 1,023 yards and 9 touchdowns. Gettysburg (6-1, 4-0 MPC) will counter with Jayden Johnson, who has 1,028 yards on 164 carries and 3 scores.
For the Blue Devils to be successful, they will have to win the battle with their offensive line against the Warriors’ D-line.
McCauley said, “We definitely expect a very physical game up front. We need to find a way to win the line of scrimmage, because we need to be consistently getting first downs. We’ll have to be more balanced, too.
“They play a 3-5 with some unique fronts, and we’ll have to figure that out.”
Quarterback Logan Alvey will need to have another good game, and so far he has produced. On 105 attempts, he’s completed 70 passes (67%) for 919 yards, 11 TDs and 3 picks.
The top receivers are Seth Stouffer (24-385, 5 TDs) and Cooper (20-166, 1 TD). Slotback Austin Wyand (11-105) is out with an injury this week.
“That’s double whammy because he starts on offense and defense (plus special teams),” McCauley said.
NOTES: For Gettysburg, QB Brady Heiser has thrown for 875 yards (65-109), with 5 TDs and 2 picks, and he has run 67 times for 237 yards and 7 scores … The top receivers are Tanner Newman (21-350, 2) and David Beamer (13-171) … These teams last played in 2019, and each team has won three times in their last six contests … LB Logan Shifflett leads G-A in tackles with 62, Parker Funk has 5 sacks, Elijah Britner has 5 tackles for loss and Stouffer has 3 interceptions.
