Greencastle-Antrim 3, James Buchanan 2: A back-and-forth rivalry Mid Penn Colonial match between two highly-ranked teams was captured in the fifth game by the unbeaten Blue Devils over the Rockets on Tuesday night at G-A.
Greencastle jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-18 and 25-19, but JB fought back, taking the next two games, 25-16 and 26-24. But then G-A turned it around again in the fifth, taking the deciding set 15-6.
“We knew this would be an intense match with a loud crowd and lots of momentum swings,” Blue Devil coach Corry Eagler said. “I’m proud of the girls for sticking it out and making big plays when it mattered. Our blocking and serve receive passing really did well tonight.”
James Buchanan, which was No. 3 in the District 3 Class 3A rankings, falls to 14-2, while the Blue Devils, the No. 1-ranked team, are 13-0 (12-0 MPC).
For Greencastle, Madeline Eagler posted 13 serving points, 4 aces, 15 digs and 36 assists. Her sister, Abigail Eagler, came up with 11 kills, 18 points, 4 aces and 16 digs, while Kiley Burkholder made 14 kills and had 17 points, 5 aces and 13 digs.
Also for G-A, Lily Kauffman had 7 kills and 4 blocks, Kate Furnish put up 6 kills, 13 points and 4 blocks, Brianna Woodring had 13 points, 4 aces and 11 digs and Ryleigh Davis served for 12 points and amassed 23 digs.
FIELD HOCKEY
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Forbes Road 1: The Blue Devils had a strong second half and subdued the Cardinals in a non-league game at Kaley Field on Tuesday evening.
Greencastle coach Lorraine Hohl said, “When we fixed our mistakes and lack of speed (in the first half), our second half of the game created scoring opportunities, ending in beautiful goals.”
Alishya Thurmond popped in the first-half goal, assisted by Ainsley Swindell. In the second half, Ellie Divelbiss scored the first goal (from Annika Gaus) and sent the pass to Swindell for her insurance goal.”
“When we pass, see space, use out speed and communicate, our style of play becomes effective. We, as coaches, are proud of the way the girls ended their senior night.”
Goalie Jade Erazo made 11 saves for G-A.
