The Shippensburg Greyhounds lost a heartbreaker 17-14 to the Gettysburg Warriors on Friday night. The Warriors went on an 11 play 80 yard drive and Jermain Gondwe drilled tough angle 18 yard field goal as time expired for the win. The game started with each team scoring twice in the first quarter for a 14-14 tie, but no one could dent the endzone after that.
The Hounds had the first possession and went 68 yards in 7 plays. Amari Kerr ripped of a 23 yard to jump start the drive. Tucker Chamberlin then found Erby Weller for 17 and then 23 for the first score. Not even three minutes into the game Noah Henry’s PAT put the Hounds up 7-0.
The Warriors answered with a 7 play 53 yard drive. A big third down completion of 15 yards to David Beamer from Brady Heiser got the drive going. Jayden Johnson ripped of a dazziling19 yard run and Cody Furman capped it with a one yardtouchdown plunge. Gondwe’s PAT tied it at the 6:56 mark.
Shippensburg came right back going 69 yards in three plays. Weller hauled in a bomb from Chamberlin for 53 and then on post caught the 14 yards for the easy touchdown. Gettysburg again answered with a 10 play 64 yard drive. On fourth and six from the Greyhound 32 Heiser hit Beamer for an 11 yard gain, Johnson dazzled again for 18 with Furman capping it with a three yard run.
Shippensburg look to be in position to retake the lead driving to the Warrior 21, but turned it over on downs in the second quarter.
Neither team scored another TD, but the Hounds had chances in the second half. Shippensburg got to Gettysburg 27, 39, 24 and 40, but either turned it over on downs or punted. The Hounds defense was up to the task keeping Gettysburg at bay until the fateful final drive.
With the score being close the stats were close as well. Gettysburg had the edge in plays 53-51, Rushing 206-141, but the Hounds had passing with 146-62 and total 287-268. Each team punted four times. Ship had five penalties and Gettysburg six. Shippensburg was 4-12 on third downs and 2-4 on fourth, but were 0-7 and 0-1 in the second half. Gettysburg 3-11 on third and 1-2 on fourth.
Gettysburg’s Johnson lead in rushing with 149 his average. Chamberlin threw for 146, with Weller hauling in five for 135. Jaxon Funson had the only turnover of the game an interception. Kaden Shope, Patrick Reed and Keshawn Benjamin each had six tackles.
Up next for the Hounds is Mechanicsburg at home.
