Greencastle-Antrim rolls over Berkeley Springs, 53-7

GREENCASTLE — A totally dominant first half allowed Greencastle-Antrim to cruise to a non-league victory over Berkeley Springs, W.Va. on Friday night at Kaley Field.

Logan Alvey

The Blue Devils (2-0) put three scores up in the first quarter and four more in the second to bring on a 46-0 halftime spread and had the mercy rule in effect before the break.

“We did what we needed to do early, then we had a chance to get the young kids some playing time in the second half,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “It was nice to get everybody into the game.”

Austin Wyand had a big night for Greencastle, scoring on a 10-yard run to open the floodgates, then tacking on a pair of punt returns for TDs, from 48 yards and 30 yards out. He has three special teams scores in two games.

Tavon Cooper also had a big night, taking it to the house from long distance three times — on runs of 24, 70 and 44 yards. Cooper finished with 179 yards on only nine carries (19.9 per carry).

The other touchdown in the first half came on a 28-yard pass from Logan Alvey to Seth Stouffer.

McCauley said, “The passing was efficient (Alvey was 4-for-6 for 92 yards), and it was nice to get scoring from the special teams again tonight.”

The final TD came in the third period, when Carter Coons carried the ball in from 10 yards out.

“Our defense did really well,” McCauley said. “I think they only had one first down in the first half, and we had a lot of tackles for losses. The front eight played very well and gave us multiple sacks, and they didn’t have much time to throw.

“Between the defense and our special teams, we were in good field position most of the time.”

The Blue Devils will put their unbeaten record on the line Friday night when they host Delone Catholic at Kaley Field at 7 p.m.
