G-A roundup: Softball team drops another heartbreaker

Waynesboro 9, Greencastle-Antrim 8: The Maidens scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth to pull out a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Blue Devils on Wednesday afternoon.

Greencastle (4-8, 3-5 MPC) has lost seven of its last eight games, and of the last six defeats, four have been by one run in games in which G-A held the lead late in the game.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 6-1 lead by scoring five runs in the top of the second inning, but Waynesboro gradually battled back.

Meadow Gambacurta carried the big stick for Greencastle, going 4-for-5, including a double, a home run, and driving in six runs. In the first, she hit an RBI double to centerfield. In the second, she swatted a grand slam to leftfield. In the fourth, she knocked in G-A’s final run with a single to left.

Caroline Logsdon also had an RBI single for the Blue Devils. Sydney Orndorff, Makayla Jerin and Emma Broadwater each had two hits.

For Waynesboro, Michelle Baker belted a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, and in the eighth, the winning run scored on a single, a stolen base, a passed ball, a walk, an intentional walk and a passed ball.
