CHAMBERSBURG — The 3-point shots weren’t falling early for Chambersburg, but once the lid came off the basket, the Trojans seemingly couldn’t miss.
The result was a dominating second quarter and a 63-38 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Wednesday night over a depleted Carlisle team at CASHS Field House. The Trojans knocked down nine threes, including five in the decisive second quarter, when they outscored the Thundering Herd, 21-6.
Chambersburg, which pushed its record to 5-1 (3-1 MPC), had 11 players enter the game and all 11 managed to score a bucket.
“It was great to see a lot of guys scoring,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We’re trying to get more guys’ confidence up and more guys making plays, which will only help our team. I saw some guys do some really cool things tonight.”
Carlisle, which was missing two starters, trailed only 8-7 late in the first period when Jacob Bassham drilled Chambersburg’s first three, followed immediately by another from Eli Shearer.
The Trojans received consecutive layups from Landen Simmons and Shearer (2, both on fast breaks) to open the second period. The next five baskets by Chambersburg were all 3-pointers — one by Ian Stewart, one by Carter Fogal and three by Bassham — and that created a 35-16 lead by halftime.
Shreffler said, “We were able to create some fast pace at times, which all started at the defensive end when we got some stops.”
Nevin Yeager had a productive game for the Trojans, scoring a season-high 7 points, passing off inside for several layups, grabbing numerous rebounds and battling the Herd’s big man, Nick Stiltner, who ended up with just four points.
“Nevin is such a hard worker, and he was giving up quite a few inches on his man,” Shreffler said. “We did a really good job on the boards Monday (in a win over CD East) and did well again tonight. It takes everybody.”
Bassham led the Trojans with 16 points and Shearer had 13. Fogal and Jai’tavius Kelly each had 6.
For Carlisle (1-5, 0-4 MPC), Dylan Young scored 23 of the team’s 38 points.
