GIRLS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 123, Central Dauphin East 26:
The Trojans opened their girls swimming season with a resounding win over the Panthers, collecting first place in each of the 11 events in a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet at the Chambersburg YMCA on Tuesday afternoon.

New Chambersburg coach Hali Cormany said, “I’m really excited for the girls to have their season start off with a win, We had some solid swims today and I think that will give us confidence moving forward. I think the versality of this group will only help us get stronger.”

The Trojans had three girls post two individual victories, and a place on two winning relays — Maddie Shifler took first in the 200 and 400 freestyl events, Hailey Fegan won the 50 and 100 free races and Layne Rydbom was first in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Also, Emma Grove won the 200 IM and was on two winning relays, Abby Caltrider placed first in the 100 backstroke and was on two relays and McKenzie Wicks and Lilly Evans each swam a leg on winning relays.

BOYS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 90, Central Dauphin East 46: Derek and Brandon Estep made excellent debuts to help the Trojans defeat CD East in a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet at the Chambersburg YMCA on Tuesday afternoon.

Derek Estep

Derek Estep captured first in the 200 free (2:00.69) and 100 butterfly (58.99), while Brandon Estep won the 200 IM (2:19.02) and 100 backstroke (1:02.64), and both swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.

“Derek did incredible for his first Trojan meet,” Chambersburg coach Chad White said. “His times in the 200 free and 100 fly would already qualify for districts. His time in the 200 free was only two seconds away from the pool record.  It’s going t be difficult to decide what events he will focus on for championships with how versatile he is. Brandon’s 200 IM and 100 back times were very strong. He is going to be very very competitive in those events in the Mid Penn.”

Joseph Decker also picked up a pair of individual wins, in the 400 free and 100 breaststroke. In addition, Jacob Shifler was on both of the wining relay teams.

White said, “Our medley relay looked very strong for our first dual meet. The time achieved tonight would already be very close to making districts from previous years. It’s going to be very exciting to see how fast the boys can get in it. Jacob and Joseph did great in the medley — they looked fresh and strong. Their speed is going to keep getting faster as the season goes on.”

BOYS BASKETBALL
Cumberland Valley 56, Chambersburg 45: The Trojans’ Eli Shearer poured in 29 points, but that was not enough to enable the Trojans to keep pace with the Eagles in the teams’ Mid Penn Commonwealth opener at the CV Dome on Tuesday night.

“By shooting poorly in the first half we dug ourselves a hole,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Fortunately, we came out of the locker room and competed at a higher level. However, their ability to score at the rim took away out momentum.”

Shearer is now averaging 23.3 points in his first three games — he scored 15 alone in the third period on Tuesday.

Shreffler said, “Eli played a fantastic game, keeping us in it for long stretches, but we need to find more consistency and balance from our other pieces. Fortunately, it’s only Game 3, so we have a lot of time to get better.”

Jacob Bassham added 9 points for the Trojans (2-1, 0-1 MPC), while CV (1-2 (1-0 MPC) was led by Nolan Gilbert’s 18 points.
