GIRLS SOCCER
Greencastle-Antrim 1, Shippensburg 0: The Blue Devils completed an undefeated season in the Mid Penn Colonial Division, but had to push past a spirited Greyhound team to do so.
In the teams’ first meeting, G-A beat Ship, 9-1. This time, the only Greencastle goal was scored by Olivia Russell and was assisted by Avery Parks.
In their last 11 games, Greencastle’s defense produced 10 shutouts, and totaled 13 for the season. It allowed only eight goals.
The Blue Devils (17-1, 12-0 MPC) will be the No. 1 seed when District 3 releases its Class 3A final rankings this weekend. The District tournament for 3A will begin Monday and Greencastle will host the No. 16 seed at 7 p.m. at Kaley Field. No. 16 in the rankings currently is Cocalico (9-8), but that could change.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Waynesboro 3, Greencastle-Antrim 1: After winning a wild and lengthy first game, the Blue Devils could not match Waynesboro and were defeated in a Mid Penn Colonial contest on Thursday at home.
G-A and the Maidens went way overtime in the first game, with the Blue Devils finally emerging with a 34-32 victory. But Waynesboro (14-4) came back to take the last three, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-18.
“The girls played well,” Greencastle coach Corry Eagler said. “The first game was hard to follow, after so much energy was expended early on. We’ll need to limit our unforced errors in order to be successful against these good teams.”
The Blue Devils got 14 kills, 2 aces, 11 service points and 15 digs from Kiley Burkholder, and Olalla Sanchez had 9 kills, 8 digs, 3 aces and 10 points, and Madeline Eagler had 40 assists, 12 points and 2 aces.
Also, Alayna Welsh had 16 digs, 10 points and 2 aces, Kate Furnish had 10 kills, Kalea Fugate had 11 points, and Lauren Pool made 3 blocks.
Greencastle (11-7, 6-6 MPC) will be on the road for the first round of the District 3 Class 3A playoffs, which is next Thursday, Oct. 28.
