Waynesboro’s Ella Lowry is in 2nd at District 3 golf

WEST YORK — Six Franklin County golfers competed in the first round of the District 3 golf championships on Friday at Honey Run Golf Club and five of them made the cut to play in the final day of the event on Saturday.

In Class AAA girls, Waynesboro’s Ella Lowry is second, Chambersburg’s Heather Sanbower is seventh and Greencastle-Antrim’s Sydney Barnes is tied for 13th.

In 3A boys, a pair of Waynesboro golfers are still alive — Dylan Byers is tied for 16th and Tyler Fortney is tied for 20th. Jeremy Otto of Chambersburg shot 87 and did not make the cut.

Lowry shot a 10-over par 82 that put her in second place, but she is 9 strokes behind the leader, Makensy Knaub of Dallastown. Lowry posted birdies on Nos. 3, 12 and 13 and shot nines of 40-42. Sanbower shot an 86 (40-46) and had a rough back nine going with four consecutive double bogeys until she finished birdie, par, par. Barnes had trouble on No. 6, scoring an 11, but she battled back. She was one-over par on her final three holes and shot 52-42 to make the cut on the number.

Byers carded a trio of birdies — Nos. 5, 13 and 14 — and had nines of 39-37 for his 76. Fortney’s 77 included nines of 38-39 and he birdied two holes, Nos. 3 and 14. Ben Freeman of Cedar Crest sits atop the leaderboard after posting a 4-under round of 68.
