Last week: Chambersburg (2-4, 0-3 MPC) was handled 34-7 by Carlisle … The Trojans threw 4 interceptions and lost 2 fumbles while gaining only 157 yards on offense … “On three of those interceptions, if the ball was thrown maybe 2 or 3 inches further, it could have been a big play for us,” Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. … “We had a nice drive at the end of the first half and scored, and at that point we were still in the game (but then the Herd scored in two plays to lead 24-7). When we looked at the film, there weren’t any players who played a clean game.” … Altoona was defeated 31-0 by Harrisburg, but trailed only 7-0 at halftime.
The Trojans: “We came out of the Carlisle game OK physically,” Luther said, “but because of some earlier injuries, we are pretty thin in some places. There’s no room for error.” … QB Jermere Jones has hit on 41 of 75 passes (55%) for 675 yards, 6 TDs and 6 interceptions … Bryce Flenory (43 carries, 244 yards, 5.7 avg., 2 TDs) and Rashawn Williams (41-145, 3.5 avg., 1 TD) are the running backs, while Jones has rushed 61 times for 275 yards (4.5 avg.) and 2 scores … Rhaigeon Parker (12-250, 1 TD) is the top receiver, followed by Andy Jean (9-123, 1 TD), Malachi Scott (5-177, 2 TDs) and James Lilley (5-63). … Chambersburg has allowed 1,970 yards and has gained 1,393 … Opponents are averaging 5 yards per carry.
The Mountain Lions: Altoona will test the Trojans’ run defense with its triple option, similar to the offense employed by Army and Navy … Fullback Ethan Stroup leads the way with 644 yards on 115 carries (5.6 avg.) and 8 TDs … QB Aidan Steinbugl has run 69 times for 265 yards and 3 TDs … Luther said, “They run that offense efficiently and their kids know what they’re doing. They will pound that fullback (Stroup) into the line, and then when you focus on him, the quarterback will keep it. Last year, we could not stop the fullback. It will come down to how well we play up front.” … Steinbugl does not pass often (29-for-62, 46%, 262 yards, 1 TD, 2 int.) … Stroup (8-57) and Ethan Hileman (7-74) are the top receivers.
Coach’s viewpoint: Luther said, “There’s a positive feeling that we’re just so close … when it clicks for us, we could be a pretty good football team. We have a base, a foundation, but we still find ways to shoot ourselves in the foot. On most of our plays, they are nine tenths positive, but that one error is being costly.”
