Last week: Greencastle (3-3, 1-2 MPC) was defeated 28-14 by Waynesboro … “They took it to us in the first quarter, but we played well in the middle of the game,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. ‘We had it to 21-14 and we had the ball, but then we threw a pick with around two minutes to go and they scored on the next play. We did play much better in the second half.” … The Wildcats (3-3, 0-2 MPC) were dropped 27-7 by unbeaten Shippensburg.
The Blue Devils: The offense will be helped this week by the return of fullback David Niebauer (73 carries, 365 yards, 5.0 avg., 1 TD) from an injury … Tavon Cooper (65-451, 6.94 avg, 4 TDs, plus 10 catches for 97 yards) has been the catalyst for the offense … Andrew Kerns (12 completions in 25 attempts, 243 yards, 1 TD, 2 int.) will start at quarterback again this week … Other top targets are Ethan Shank (7-217, 3 TDs) and Brady Diller (8-109, 2 TDs) … McCauley said, “Lorcan Wright made another 16 tackles last week (76 for the season) and had to play fullback, too. Seth Stouffer made a nice play for an interception — he’s playing really well at cornerback.” … Shank has 64 tackles and 3 interceptions; Stouffer was 36 tackles and 2 picks.
The Wildcats: Mechanicsburg is coached by Anthony Rose, a former Chambersburg girls basketball coach … The Wildcats have two good linebackers, Sam Deluca in the middle and Marlon Aristy on the outside … McCauley said, “That No. 56 (Aristy) I thought was a senior last year, but he’s back and he’s a horse.” … Mechanicsburg’s QB is Jeffrey Lougee, and Parker Sample is the top running back … McCauley said, “They are a spread team that likes to run the ball. Their back (Sample) I think had 28 carries for 136 against Ship last week. They’ve got some size up front.”
Coach’s viewpoint: “Mechanicsburg is really good,” McCauley said. “We just don’t have any breaks. I said to the staff the other day that I think this is probably the toughest 10-game schedule we’ve played since I’ve been here. Every week is like a knockout fight.”
