BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 1, Cumberland Valley 0: Starting an underclass-laden lineup, the Trojans surprised the Eagles 1-0 on a second-half goal in a Mid Penn Conference showdown Thursday night at Trojan Stadium.
With 10 minutes remaining in a scoreless deadlock, Chambersburg’s Cristian Lopez dribbled into the CV penalty box and drew a penalty kick. Cohen Redding slid the resulting shot into the left corner for the game’s only goal.
Trojan coach Corey Grove said, “I think the stat line says it all (the Eagles led in shots, 13-2, and corners, 8-4); we knew we were playing against a really good CV team, and had to play without one of our top players, Cole Myers. Tonight I started just two seniors, with three sophomores on the field. We are young, but the boys showed a lot of heart and resilience tonight.”
Goalkeeper Drew Cover made five saves in the shutout win.
“We know if we can hold the shutout, we five ourselves opportunities to win games,’ Grove said. “Tonight, we did that.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Cumberland Valley 2, Chambersburg 1: The Trojans held a 1-0 lead for 22 minutes over the Eagles, but CV mounted a second-half comeback and won a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday evening in New Kingstown.
Ahsia Thomas scored her seventh goal of the season 11 minutes into the game to give Chambersburg (3-4, 1-3 MPC) a lead. Aubrey Pyne had her sixth assist on the play.
“The girls came out very strong in the first half and took the lead,” Trojan coach Ed Franchi said. “It was a very nice counter with Aubrey delivering a pretty through ball.”
But CV dominated the second half and scored the winning goal with 24 minutes left.
Franchi said, “They changed a couple of things in the second half and had the better of play. We had several solid chances after (CV took the lead), but just couldn’t find the back of the net. We’ve been playing tough all season and I’m very proud of the girls. I told them we’re right there pounding on the door and that we will break through.”
