ENOLA — Greencastle-Antrim had East Pennsboro on the ropes in the second half, with a chance to seal a Mid Penn Colonial victory.
But the Panthers made a big play, changed the momentum, and ended up taking a 27-19 win over the Blue Devils on Friday night in Enola.
“This was a tough one to take,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “We had a nice third quarter and led 19-7, and we were looking to seal the deal. But we let them back in the game.”
With the 19-7 lead, Greencastle (2-2, 0-1 MPC) was in field goal range with a third-down play, but quarterback Taylor Conrad was picked off in the end zone by Ethan Campbell. From that point, the Panthers (3-1, 1-0 MPC) took control and scored 20 points in the final period.
McCauley said, “On one drive in the fourth quarter we had a decision about going for it on fourth down. It would have been a long field goal try, so we went for it and we got stuffed.”
East Pennsboro’s star running back Sy Burgos carried 21 times for 210 yards and two long touchdown runs.
“Really, other than those two long runs, we did a pretty good job on him,” McCauley said. “We were in good shape — we were going no huddle and up tempt and had them going. But then we didn’t convert, and I think they wore us down in the fourth quarter. They were running downhill on us. This will be a tough one to swallow.”
Brady Diller (12-yard run), David Niebauer (10-yard run) and Conrad (1-yard run) scored the Blue Devil touchdowns.
Conrad hit on 11 of 17 passes for 122 yards and Niebauer ran 18 times for 84 yards. Tavon Cooper ran for 67 yards and caught three balls for 45 more.
On defense, Seth Stouffer and Logan Shifflett each picked off a pass and Diller had a sack.
