Greencastle earns nice road win over Delone Catholic

McSHERRYSTOWN — Delone Catholic and its well-run wing-T offense went right down the field and scored Friday night on its first possession against Greencastle-Antrim.

But by the time the Squires could score again, it was in the fourth quarter and the Blue Devils had posted five touchdowns on their way to a 35-13 non-league victory on the road.

“They run that wing-T well and we had to match their tempo,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “After that first drive we were good against it. They got some yards in the first half, and some at the very end, but we made some adjustments and stopped them in the second half.”

The Blue Devils (2-1) got a big game from running back Tavon Cooper, who scored on runs of 18 and 55 in the second half, gained 102 yards on 9 carries and caught a pass for another 35 yards.

McCauley said, “The offensive line guys and the wide receivers blocked very well and we got Tavon into the open field. We did what we do on offense and our guys up front wore them down.”

After the Delone touchdown by Koltyn Keller, the Blue Devils came back to go ahead 7-6 on a 13-yard pass from Taylor Conrad to Brady Diller and Nate Kirkwood’s kick. A 5-yard run by Conrad made it 14-7 at halftime.

In its previous two games, Greencastle had laid an egg in the third quarter, but not Friday. Instead, the Blue Devils scored two more times, one on a 3-yard run by Conrad and then Cooper’s first TD to take a 28-6 advantage.

“We came out and played well in the third quarter,” McCauley said. “We stopped their first drive and then went right down and scored. After their first drive, we controlled the game.”

McCauley pointed out middle linebacker Jake Yelton for his play, and safety Lorcan Wright also stood out. Safety Ethan Shank contributed heavily with two interceptions.

“And Conrad used his legs several times and was a difference-maker for us,” McCauley said. “He helped us be very balanced on offense.”

The Blue Devils are on the road for the third straight week next Friday, when they kick off their Mid Penn Colonial schedule at East Pennsboro.
