Yet another rally allows Trojans to escape G-A in softball

FAYETTEVILLE — This comeback thing is getting practically commonplace for the Chambersburg softball team.

For the second straight Monday, and one of many times this season, the Trojans fell behind in a game, but scored late to pull out a win.

Monday at Norlo Park, the victim was rival Greencastle-Antrim, which held a lead until a four-run bottom of the sixth inning put Chambersburg ahead for good in an 8-6 non-league victory.

Samantha Paetow

“Us coming from behind, I guess I’ll just have to accept it — it’s who we are,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “They just keep battling.”

Chambersburg catcher Samantha Paetow, who delivered the big hit in the sixth, said, “It feels almost normal to be behind. I feel like we’re used to being in that situation now.”

Greencastle coach Mark DeCarli said, “It felt great for five and a half innings. Every year we play them tough. We played our hearts out and I’m pleased.”

Bailee Martin-Irving held held the strong Trojan lineup in check for four innings after a rough first inning. She got the first out in the sixth, but Saleen Null singled and Ashli Ganoe pounded an RBI double to right field. Erin Pattillo hit a hard grounder that hopped over the glove of the shortstop to tie the game 6-6.

An out, an intentional walk to Alyssa Brechbill (who was 3-for-3 with two doubles) and a stolen base put runners on second and third with two outs, with Paetow at the plate.

Paetow worked the count to 3-2, then ripped a line drive into right-centerfield that scored both Pattillo and Brechbill.

“I’ve been in that situation before, so it wasn’t new,” Paetow said. “I knew with it being a full count, she’d have to throw something over the plate and she did.”

Skultety said, “The girls put Sam in good position and she came through. Walking Brechbill was probably the best thing for them to do. She worked it to 3-2 and them smoked the ball.”

The Blue Devils (9-6) struck for two runs off Mackenzie Stake in the first inning, with Martin-Irving (3-for-4) doubling, Adrianna Beeler hitting a sacrifice fly and Makayla Jerin bringing in a run with a hit.

Adrianna Beeler

Chambersburg (15-1) came right back to score three times, on five consecutive hits. Brechbill doubled and Paetow, Kenzie Boyd, Katie Robinson and Katelin Secrist hit singles, with the first three getting RBIs. But a runner was thrown out at home to help end the inning.

G-A went back on top 4-3 in the third when Martin-Irving singled and Beeler blasted a shot well over the left field fence for a home run.

Pattillo relieved Stake in the fourth and gave up single runs in the fourth on a hit by Martin-Irving, and the fifth (unearned) with Sydra Royer bringing in the run.

“The middle of our order has been on fire lately,” DeCarli said.

Skultety said, “We knew they were good at 3-4-5 there and they took avdvantage. I think the biggest out was in the sixth when Pattillo got Jerin to ground out to end the inning (with two on base). Erin did a phenomenal job.”

Chambersburg got one back in the fifth when Brechbill doubled and Boyd hit a sacrifice fly.

NOTES: Both teams face crucial division games Tuesday — Chambersburg at home vs. Cumberland Valley and the Blue Devils at home vs. Northern York … DeCarli created a “Battle of the Bats” trophy that goes to the winner of this annual game … It features a helmet with G-A’s logo on one side and the Trojans’ on the other … Boyd made two spectacular plays in left field — diving to catch a pop-up on the skin of the infield, and crashing into the fence to catch a long fly by Martin-Irving.
