Trojans overcome 7-1 deficit in win over Blue Devils in baseball

SCOTLAND — Greencastle-Antrim opened its baseball game with Chambersburg on Monday with a bang, scoring four runs in the first inning and three in the second to take a 7-1 lead.

That could have been curtains for the Trojans, who came into the non-league game at Greene Township Park with a 4-10 record.

But Chambersburg came back with a bigger bang, scoring 11 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings combined, to down the Blue Devils 13-7.

Dru Bowling

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way the guys battled back,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “We fell behind, but it was early and we kept to our small ball and gained confidence.”

That confidence culminated in a rare sighting — a Chambersburg home run at their home park, GTP.

In the fifth inning, Chambersburg still trailed 7-5, but put together a six-run rally, capped by a grand slam home run to leftfield by Gavin Kissel. It was his first career homer and one of the very few in recent years by the Trojans at GTP.

Folmar said, “It doesn’t get out of here very often, that’s for sure. That was huge.”

Kissel said, “It felt amazing. I’ve never hit a ball that went off the bat so hard. I was really just trying for a single, but the first pitch looked good and I hit it. We were really happy to get all of those runs.”

Greg Cunha also had a productive day for Chambersburg, with a single, double and triple in four at-bats, driving in five runs.

“He spread the ball around the field nicely,” Folmar said.

Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said, “We were reflecting on the game, and I really don’t think we let down (after we got the big lead). It was exciting to score those runs early, and we kept getting hits and trying to tack on more runs.

Connor Rohm

“I really think Chambersburg just won the game. They see good pitching all the time and they just put better swings on the ball, even when I thought we made good pitches. And they hit all the way through the game — that grand slam was a back breaker.”

Trailing 11-7 in the bottom of the fifth, Greencastle (12-5) put its first two batters on base. But an attempted sacrifice bunt turned into a strikeout, then the Trojans turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Dru Bowling entered the game in the second inning on the mound and did not allow any runs, even though he gave up six hits.

“He was fantastic,” Folmar said.

NOTES: Bowling also was 3-for-5 for Chambersburg, and Braden Zeger had two hits and a pair of runs batted in … For Greencastle, Connor Rohm was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Caiden Smith and Logan Layton were each 3-for-4 with one batted in.
