The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers split a pair of close baseball games last week, defeating Heritage Academy 5-3 at Hagerstown Municipal Stadium and losing 3-2 in eight innings at Shalom Christian in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game.
Against Shalom, the Blazers’ Carson Hull had a shutout going into the seventh inning before Shalom rallied for a pair of runs, tying the game on Isaac Lance’s two-out base hit. Adin Smith drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a soft liner that plopped down on the right-field foul line.
The Blazers (1-4, 0-2 MDCC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Blaine Minnier raced home on a double-steal attempt. They went ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning when Aaron Minnier singled to score Felix Kauffeldt.
Nick Allen was 3-for-4 for Shalom.
In the win over Heritage, the Blazers led throughout but had to withstand several late Heritage threats.
Hull pitched the first six innings to pick up the win. Blaine Minnier came on to pitch the seventh and retired three straight batters on a pop-up and two strikeouts after the Eagles loaded the bases with nobody out.
After Heritage pulled within two runs, Minnier clubbed a solo home run in the top of the sixth to give the Blazers a 5-2 lead.
