Greyhounds blast L-S to move into 5A semifinals

SHIPPENSBURG — Lampeter-Strasburg hung with Shippensburg into the third quarter, but a 13-0 run by the Greyhounds spanning the third and fourth periods was too much to recover from.

Ship earned a 60-41 victory in a District 3 Class 5A boys basketball playoff game Thursday night at home, using strong defense, an opportunistic offense and success from the free throw line to pull away in the second half

The No. 3-seeded Greyhounds (16-2) will now play on the road at No. 2 Lower Dauphin (17-3), a 59-42 winner over Manheim Central, in a semifinal game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In the first half, Shippensburg’s largest lead was 12, at 20-8, but thanks to 8 points from Tyler Burton, the Pioneers got it back to a 27-22 deficit at the half. The teams went back-and-forth early in the third, with a layup by Luke Vranich bringing L-S to within 35-29 with about three minutes left.

But the Hounds’ defense then took over the game, not allowing another point for the next seven minutes, by which time Ship had built its lead to 48-29.

A fast break by Isaiah Houser ignited the run, and before the third period ended, Anthony Smith followed in his own missed shot, and later hit two free throws for a 41-29 lead at the break.

In the fourth, Houser scored a layup after a neat cross-court pass from Jeremy Thomas, then Smith made a pair of foul shots. Smith converted a three-point play on a fast break to finish the run.

During that time, Ship’s 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man defenses stymied the Pioneers. Also mixed in were two blocked shots by Jacob Cramer and another by Houser. Down the stretch, Smith kept getting fouled and he responded by hitting 8 of 10 free throws in the last quarter.

Smith led Ship with 24 points and Statum dropped in 16, including 8 in the first quarter. Thomas scored 8 and Houser added 7. The Greyhounds sank 13 of 17 foul shots for the game (Smith was 12-for-15).

For Lampeter-Strasburg, which exits with a 9-4 record, Burton ended up with 18 points.
