Shippensburg girls ousted from districts by Twin Valley

SHIPPENSBURG — Shippensburg couldn’t get much going on offense except for Elke Staver and it eventually cost the Greyhounds in a District 3 Class 5A first round girls basketball playoff loss, 33-30, at home against Twin Valley on Wednesday night

Staver scored 19 of the Lady Hounds’ 30 points, and had 15 of their 17 in the second half.

Twin Valley (17-7), the No. 10 seed, will now play at No. 2 Spring Grove (17-2) on Friday. Spring Grove defeated Northern York 57-31 on Wednesday. Shippensburg finished with a 14-4 record.

The Raiders led the entire first half. In the third, Twin Valley held a 24-20 lead that didn’t change for much of the quarter as both teams missed a slew of shots. Finally, Staver canned a 3-pointer near the end of the third to bring the Lady Hounds to within one point.

Staver opened the fourth with a short jumper in the lane to give Shippensburg its first lead, 25-24. Morgan Lennon gave the lead back to Twin Valley with a layup, but Staver once again put Ship ahead, 27-26. The Raiders regained the lead, 28-27, on a drive by Natali Foster.

With 0:56 left, Lennon made 1 of 2 free throws for a 29-27 edge, then Ship turned the ball over and Foster knocked down a pair of free throws to give her team a 31-27 lead with 0:31 left.

Staver gave the Greyhounds hope by banging in a 3-pointer with 0:16 left. Foster was fouled and made 1 of 2 for a 32-30 lead. Tori Rumbaugh — the Hounds’ leading scorer for the season, who was held without a field goal — tried to drive the lane for a tying basket, but got tangled up and fell before she could get a shot off.

Staver made four threes and Aspyn Keetch (5 points) made one for Ship.

Foster led Twin Valley with 12 points and Lennon added 11. The Raiders were 5-for-8 at the foul line in the final quarter and 14 of 24, while Shippensburg attempted only 6 foul shots and made 3.
