Greencastle girls drop a tough one to York Suburban

GREENCASTLE — Greencastle-Antrim held a six-point lead after three quarters, but York Suburban turned it around in the fourth period, outscoring G-A 13-6 and capturing a 37-36 victory Wednesday night in a first-round District 3 Class 5A girls basketball game at Greencastle.

The Trojans scored the first six points of the final quarter, then Jenna Powell hit a layup to put the Blue Devils ahead 32-30. But a three-point play by Maddison Perring put York Suburban ahead 33-32 — it was the Trojans’ first lead since the first quarter.

York Suburban took the advantage to 37-32 before Greencastle made its final push. Mia Libby drove through the defense for a layup with 38 seconds left, then after three turnovers in a row, Libby was fouled and sank both to make it 37-36. The Blue Devils’ press nearly caused another turnover, but eventually it had to foul Xaio Warren with 6 seconds left.

Warren missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Libby corralled the long rebound. But G-A was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

Greencastle, the No. 8 seed, ends its season with a 13-4 record. No. 9 seed Twin Valley (15-4) will play Friday at No. 1 Mechanicsburg (16-3), a 35-31 winner over Hershey.

Both teams played tough defense, resulting in quite a few turnovers.

For Greencastle, Libby led the way with 14 points and 3 assists. Sharpshooter Sayge Wilhide was well-covered and held to 8 points, and she added 2 assists.

Also for G-A, Haley Noblit scored 5 points and had 7 rebounds, Olivia Winslow had 2 points and 7 boards, Powell had 4 points and 4 rebounds, and Lauren Pool added 2 points and 6 boards.

Blue Devil assistant coach Scott McKeever said, “We want to recognize our three seniors for all they have done the last four years. Sayge, Olivia and Jenna will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. They are the type of kids you want in your program — hard working, great attitudes and true leaders. ”

York Suburban was led by Alyssa Dougherty with 18 points and Perring had 10.
