JB’s Hayden Shirk places 5th in District 3 wrestling

COLONIAL PARK — District 3 held its Class 2A Wrestling Championships on Sunday at CD East H.S. and Hayden Shirk of James Buchanan earned a fifth-place medal.

Shirk, who was third in Section I on Saturday, received a bye in the quarterfinal round at 126 pounds.

In the semifinals, Shirk fell 3-1 to Eli Bounds of Boiling Springs, with a Bounds takedown with 1:23 left being the deciding points.

In a consolation semifinal, Christian Doi of Camp Hill led 3-1 to start the third period on top and he eventually pinned Shirk.

That knocked Shirk out of contention for the Southeast Regional, but he did come back to edge Marvin Armistead of Berks Catholic for fifth place.

Armistead led 3-0 until Shirk took him down to end the second period. In the third, Shirk escaped and took Armistead down again with 1:35 left, and allowed only an escape the rest of the way for a 5-4 victory.
