Trojan wrestlers roll to 65-6 win over Lower Dauphin

CHAMBERSBURG — A fairly young Chambersburg wrestling team met an even younger team Wednesday, and the difference was stark.

The Trojans scored six pins and two major decisions and their only loss was a forfeit in a 65-6 non-league match victory over Lower Dauphin at CASHS Field House.

“We’re young, but they trumped us on that tonight,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “They have a really young group.”

The Falcons (1-5) have only one senior on their roster, and six freshmen and two sophomores populated the lineup against the Trojans.

Chambersburg (5-2) racked up four pins in fewer than 40 seconds — Kelby Mixell (145 pounds, 0:14), Ryder Davenport (160, 0:29), Ethan Faytol (189, 0:30) and Rylan Carter (113, 0:37), while Anthony Colangelo (138, 1:41) and Zack Evans (285, 2:44) also secured pins.

Karl Shindledecker won 12-0 at 126 over Clayton Koser, and Luke Mentzer (132) took a 13-0 major over Griffen Barilla.

“I was happy with Shindledecker,” Matt Mentzer said. “He met probably the most talented kid on their team and he controlled the bout.”

The only close bout of the evening came at 152, where Chambersburg’s Gavin Nicholson took a 5-4 nod over Marshal Stahl on the strength of two takedowns. He got one early in the match to lead 2-0 after one. A Nicholson escape made it 3-0 to lead off the second, and his second takedown boosted his lead to 5-0.

But Stahl caught Nicholson getting too high and came out from under for a reversal. In the third, Nicholson was able to ride Stahl until another reversal with less than 10 seconds remaining made it close.

Mentzer said, “Today was a good day that started early. The kids have not really been able to be around each other like they would normally, but there was some group text they shared today and when they got here everybody was participating and helping. Maybe it was because it was Senior Night.

“It’s a little thing maybe, but I noticed it. I just want to see them gel and come together. So it was nice to see them be kind of a normal group today.”

NOTES: The Trojans scored the first takedown in each bout … Lower Dauphin totaled just 6 points in the 9 bouts wrestled; all came on reversals … At the Spring Grove Duals Tournament on Jan. 30, Chambersburg’s opponents will be the host Rockets, Carlisle and Waynesboro … At the Chambersburg Duals on Feb. 6, the other teams are Shippensburg, Big Spring, Hempfield and Red Land.
